O'Neil joined O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when the singer was still in high school. The judges were impressed with her singing and she was able to advance into the Top 100 Round. O'Neil received excellent praise from the judges. However, she experienced significant defeats in the top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals, when she was put into the bottom three and the bottom two spots, respectively. Judges were horrified by this and informed the crowd that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil was consistently giving stellar performances since then, always finished in the three top performers. With two other stunning performances on the 7th of September 2005, when O'Neil and Rex Goudie made it to the final two competitors, the judge Werner reportedly predicted that the newspaper headlines would read O'Neil beat Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and also the youngest champion in the show's history . O'Neil received a phone call from Canadian Premier Paul Martin congratulating her on winning Canadian Idol immediately.
